Sequoia Capital has raised about $7 billion for a new expansion-strategy fund, according to reports from The Economic Times and Bloomberg Law. The new vehicle is Sequoia’s latest push into late-stage investing in the US and Europe, with artificial intelligence startups such as OpenAI and Anthropic among the companies in scope.
The fundraising is described as the firm’s first fresh raise under its new leadership. It also appears to be roughly double the size of Sequoia’s prior $3.4 billion expansion fund, which the firm raised in 2022. According to the reports, the fundraising took place earlier in 2026 and Sequoia declined to comment.
What is Sequoia's new fund designed to do?
Sequoia’s new fund is built to support its expansion strategy, the part of the firm focused on later-stage investing in the US and Europe. In practical terms, that means the capital is meant for bigger, later rounds rather than seed-stage bets.
The reports say the fund will let Sequoia expand its investments in large companies, including AI startups such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Bloomberg said those companies’ computing requirements have helped drive the very large fundraising rounds now common in frontier AI. The Economic Times likewise said the fund will support AI startups and mature companies outside AI-native businesses.
Why does this raise matter now?
The $7 billion raise stands out because it comes as Sequoia has been reorganizing its investing leadership. According to the reports, Roelof Botha handed leadership to Alfred Lin and Pat Grady as co-stewards last year. In March 2026, Sequoia named former senior steward Doug Leone as chairman and returned him to an active investing role.
The firm has also been adding and reshuffling investors. The reports say Sequoia recently brought in Liam Corrigan and Sonali Singh, and rehired Carl Eschenbach after he left in 2022 to become co-CEO of Workday. At the same time, Josephine Chen, Charlie Curnin and Cornelius Menke stepped back from positions at the firm, while Ravi Gupta reduced his role to launch a startup but remains a partner.
The new capital also comes on top of about $2.5 billion that Sequoia announced last year for seed, venture and growth-stage investing. A securities filing cited in the report showed Sequoia had more than $80 billion in assets under management at the end of 2025.
Which companies could benefit from the new capital?
The reports say Sequoia has already invested in Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI, which the report says is now part of SpaceX.
Bloomberg, as carried by The Economic Times, also said Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI were all jockeying to go public in 2026, which could lead to significant returns for Sequoia if the listings succeed. The report also pointed to Wiz’s $32 billion sale to Alphabet as an example of a mature-company exit, saying the deal closed the previous month.
Outside AI-native startups, the fund is also intended to back mature companies. That keeps Sequoia focused on later-stage opportunities beyond AI-native businesses.
The broader fundraising environment for large venture and growth funds remains active. The Economic Times report said Iconiq is fundraising for its eighth fund and has made significant investments in Anthropic, while Bloomberg previously reported that General Catalyst was in talks to raise about $10 billion in new funding.
