AGRA and SMEDAN have opened applications for a national youth agribusiness contest in Nigeria, offering seed funding, incubation support and mentorship to selected winners.
Who can apply for the contest?
AGRA and SMEDAN have opened the National Youth in Agribusiness Innovation Contest for Nigerians aged 18 to 35 who are running or launching agribusinesses anywhere in the country. The X post says applications opened Friday, October 9, 2026 and close Friday, October 16, 2026.
The notice says the contest is open to ventures at idea, prototype or growth stage in areas including climate-smart farming, agri-tech, agroprocessing, supply chains, agri-finance, insurance and farm security. It also says women, rural youth and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
The post says applicants need either a CAC-registered business name or a cooperative registration certificate. Secondary reports, including Vanguard and MSME Africa Online, add that qualifying registration can also include SMEDAN MSME registration or a limited-company registration.
Applicants must be Nigerians aged 18 to 35, but the registration requirement applies to the agribusiness rather than the individual applicant. The announcement also says land, collateral or a finished product are not required to apply.
What do winners receive?
The contest says it will name 10 winners who receive seed funding, incubation support, six months of mentorship and introductions to financiers and buyers. The prize structure listed in the announcement gives ₦5 million to the winner, ₦3 million to the first runner-up, ₦2 million to the second runner-up, and ₦1 million each for positions four through 10.
Vanguard reported the contest is jointly run by AGRA, SMEDAN and Jesnoch International Limited, and delivered by Plus Incubation Hub Nigeria Limited under an AGRA-funded project called "Systems Strengthening for BDS Provision and Access to Finance for Ag-SMEs." The aim is to find, train and finance young Nigerians building businesses in agriculture.
The broader support package goes beyond cash. Vanguard said every eligible applicant will be invited to a free nationwide virtual training day on October 17, 2026, covering agribusiness fundamentals, financial literacy, access to finance and investment readiness. The sessions will be recorded and shared for applicants who cannot attend live.
What happens after applications close?
The next stage combines training, regional selection and live pitching. Vanguard reported that a further 120 young people will receive two days of in-person training split across Niger, Nasarawa and Kaduna on October 21 and 22, 2026, with places offered in order of verified, complete submission to eligible applicants resident in each state. The report said each focal state will reserve at least 12 places for women and at least 8 for rural participants.
Vanguard also said 60% of finalist and training places are weighted to Niger, Nasarawa and Kaduna, which are the focal states for the parent project, while applicants from other states compete for the remaining places on the same published rubric. It said selection for training is separate from contest judging and carries no advantage in the competition.
From there, 30 finalists will pitch live in Lagos on October 29, 2026, before the winners are publicly presented at the National MSME Conference in Lagos from November 8 to 10, 2026. The X notice similarly said prizes will be presented at the MSMEs Conference in Lagos in November 2026.
